St. Petersburg State MUSEUM of the History of Professional Education

The St. Petersburg State Museum of the History of Professional Education (Vocational Training) is an interesting museum and records the heroic achievements of the Russian tradition of vocational education. The museum was created in 1980 for the 40th anniversary of the Decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet « On State Manpower Resources ».

Each hall of the museum is telling one page of the history of vocational training in Russia which is closely linked to the history of the country. The museum forms a base for research into, and education about, the education system at different levels of vocational training.

The museum collection consists of  historic documents (in the form of actual objects, written and graphic items) from the time of Peter I (1701- the opening of the first school of mathematics and navigation in Moscow) until the present day.

The Museum is presenting on the second floor the permanent exhibition and on the first floor and in the basement temporary exhibitions.
The permanent exhibition consists of historical materials about the development of vocational training in Russia and St. Petersburg from Peter the Great until these days.
The temporary exhibitions form additions to the permanent exhibition and represent, as a rule, the exploration in depth of one or more of the museum’s main themes.

The basic types of temporary exhibition are:
• exhibitions about a particular stage in the history of vocational training in Russia
• exhibitions devoted to outstanding people in the history of vocational training in Russia.
• group and one-person exhibitions reflecting the technical creativity of pupils in initial and secondary vocational training.

The museum’s guides regularly give tours of the museum to young people of schools for vocational training to complete their education at comprehensive schools, providing full information about technical and trade schools, lyceums and colleges in St. Petersburg and district.

The museum regularly holds events which are known as “Professional Decades”. These “decades” are an opportunity for students who are about to choose a profession to speak personally with those who are already in that profession, and also to speak with possible future employers. We believe that this process greatly simplifies the choice of a future profession and improves success in employment.

The museum cooperating with national and international organizations to develop the offer to inform youngsters in their professional career.
