Through the work I am (translated from Afrikaans to English) I admit
the vulnerability of the Self through using the scale of the work and
the specific choice of words. The work can be experienced on a physical
and visual level because of the specific location and the chosen scale
of the work. The words suggests a presence of a person, who ever may be
interpolated by the work, but it also signifies an open ended concept as
it acts as an incomplete sentence. The viewer can either admit to the
existence of the Self through only reading the words, or can engage in
the work by making up new meanings as the sentence can be completed
through adding any word next to it.
I finally see this work as a gesture to that enables the viewer to come
to realisation through the experience of the work, visually, physically
or conceptually.
