  • FINNISH FOREST - SOURCE OF ART - VERNISSAGE

an art project with and in the forest

On Tuesday August 12 the sculptor Varol Topaç will bring the guests to the area in the LABYRINTH to see the acquisitions of 2008. Through the installations a part of the forest-LABYRINTH has got new points of view. Different artists were creating special installations for a place they selected by themselves.

Going through the forest-LABYRINTH it is surprising the visitor the moment the installation is visible.
The portrait gallery - the hall of fame - is showing the persons involved into Saksala ArtRadius. The Iranian artists Behrouz Rae and Fereshte Moosavi have finished this installation at the end of April. The 8 portraits are realistic and casts of the original heads. Through the material and the color it becomes estranged, even the individual persons are  recognizable.
The hanging installation - - of Marijke Bongers is inviting to direct a look against the sky. The wooden sticks are colored by fabric and thread. When there is wind they can whisper. To find the installation there are colored stones on different places in the forest-LABYRINTH.
The installation with the doors -  -  by Varol Topaç is making a barrier in the LABYRINTH passage, but it is also inviting to go through and follow the colored sticks.

The three installations are close together and it shows that it is possible to create more interesting places in the forest-LABYRINTH.

    THE STILL OF COLOR

She has finished her installation a little bit earlier and can be found near Varol’s work. She has added new forms and materials to the natural environment. The natural form of a tree trunk is white colored and constructed on the top of other trunks. The shape of the trunk is clear to the sky and has different expressions in different light and weather. The place under the trunk has been changed by adding the trunk and even it is not a roof it is covering the open spot. The by fabric colored wooden sticks are asking for attention and are also bringing peace and silence to the open space. They are hanging and moving a little, it can apply for a meditation.

    PORTRAIT HALL

The first realized installation is from the two Iranian artists Behrouz Rae and Fereshte Moosavi. They have planted in an open area pedestals with portraits of people related to Saksala. Their installation has changed the chosen spot completely. The persons are natural casts of living people, but the material is synthetic (polyester). Through the contrast the place gets a new content, but also the portraits have got an extra dimension.

    DOOR OF PERCEPTION

He has built a door and gate in a path. Between both elements people can go, but have to take care through the way the passage is covered and filled. The installation is of wood and partly colored in ultramarine blue. The color is a representation of culture in nature. The color attends the visitor on its character and is guiding the eye from the beginning to the end.

The door is a construction and is not a thing what regular can be found in a forest. The meaning of the door and the gate is well-known, but in a place like this it works different and it is the visitor who can find out what it means for him/her.

The original forest-LABYRINTH of Saksala ArtRadius in Haukivuori is a very special example of a labyrinth plan. The location in a neglected Christmas tree forest is one unexpected part and the other unique element is the way the LABYRINTH is building up through the years.

In 2006 the first plans were made by different artists, in 2007 the trees were cut up to two meters and a part of the paths were installed. The same year the first objects and installations were created for some spots.

In 2008 it was possible to organize the WOOD/INSTALLATION SYMPOSIUM –FINNISH FOREST – SOURCE OF ART - Artists from different countries have made in a part of the forest-LABYRINTH 3 different installations. Through these installations they have given a personal content to these spots and it gives the LABYRINTH more than one reason to enter and to find the art works.

Normal a LABYRINTH is made to go in and to find the shortest way to go out. This forest-LABYRINTH is based on the idea it is good to go in and to find all the treasures which are in it.

Thanks to the contribution of Arts Council Finland and Länsi-Savo it was possible to have this year 3 new installations which are inviting visitors to find their own feelings with nature through the visions of the artists.

The sculptor Lucien den Arend is the curator of the LABYRINTH.
All artists were bringing new parts into the forest-LABYRINTH, more or less natural or related to natural forms. It is wonderful to see how through the artists Saksala ArtRadius is changing all the time and offers new experiences to visitors.
