New Collaborative Exhibition Featuring International Artists selected from the Artist Residency Program at Saksala ArtRadius:
    Sojourn in White

    Project Description:
This project engages international multi-disciplinary dialogue between three active arts professionals. Curated by Australian based artist and curator: Claire Watson, two artists have been selected to collaborate in an exhibition entitled “Sojourn in White”. The Iranian artist Behrouz Rae, and Dutch artist Ilse Van Den Berk were sourced during a residency at Saksala ArtRadius in Haukivuori, Finland. Immersed in a white snowy environment, they were busy creating new work exploring the interior and exterior of the residency premises but under curatorial counsel, their diverse practices have collided.

Van Den Berk is an abstract painter whilst Rae is a multi-media artist. Together they have commenced collaborative work based on the dominant shade of Finland’s winter: white. From white, colour is born. Van Den Berk and Rae are connected by an interest in exploring this achromatic theme through creative negotiation. In the coming weeks both artists will extend their practice beyond its traditional scope. A studio space has been set aside solely for this purpose as they work together toward the one goal. As they venture into a course of collaborative intervention, they will be guided into new and challenging territory; they will embark on a sojourn in white.

    When & Where
The exhibition will be exhibited at Saksala Art Radius in Finland in March 2008. Currently additional exhibition venues are being explored including spaces in Helsinki, Finland and should funding become available, there is the possibility for the exhibition to travel to Australia and be enhanced further by the participation of another artist from Melbourne, Victoria.

    Rationale
This project identifies the impact of place on an artist’s practice. For Ilse, this impact has been discovered through lengthy wanderings through the snowy white terrain of Saksala Art Radius’ grounds where she has made numerous sketches. For Behrouz, place has been unearthed in Saksala’s untended attic where the discovery of a white pair of antiquated underpants has seen him develop new work. This unlikely discovery has also become a point of continuity within the theme of white.

This project shares at its core, the value of undertaking an arts residency as all the participants have become involved through undertaking an international residency in Finland. The final outcome will be an exhibition featuring photography, installation and painting. The artists involved will be encouraged to extend their practice into new territory.
