In New England the historical connection with
Europe is still visible and it was very interesting to see the
landscape, nature and people in this part of the USA.
It was a great pleasure to visit during my tour through New England different artists communities. I
will thank Margaret Murphy (Fine Arts Work Center), David Macy (MacDowell
Colony) and George Pearlman (Vermont Studio Center), and also Caitlin
Strokosch (Alliance of Artists Communities) for their
time, hospitality, interest and advices during my tour. To get
as the founder of Saksala ArtRadius an inside view in these
organizations has created an extra dimension to the general
information about these residencies but has also given a reflection
on the own vision and view.
It is interesting that these remarkable artists
communities are situated in rural environs as a part of the
philosophy of the founders of these places. All three are total
different from the start. The atmosphere is the result of the
location, philosophy, artists group and staff.

MacDowell Colony as the oldest residency (founded in 1906) in
the USA has build 32 studios all over in the forest and fields. The
studios are situated in a way the artists are isolated from each
other. The studio is the place were the individual artist can
concentrate, work, study, experiment without any pressure. During
breakfast and dinner and also during communal activities and
meetings the artists are together. Over 6000 artists during the 100
year were invited to stay.
Vermont Studio Center as the largest international
artist-in-residence in the USA
Fine Arts Work Center initiated by famous artists and writers is
an active community during winter and summer with a various program
for young artists.
