Meeting with the chairman of the regional Arts-Council Kirsimaria E. Törönen-Ripatti during the opening of an exhibition in GalleriAri in Mikkeli.

A video presentation of the artist Siard de Haan in GalleriAri in Mikkeli

I have been at different official openings of new exhibitions. If you own an art centre, it’s important to make sure everybody knows who you are. These activities are very important in that way. It’s also important to know what is going on in the area considering art. GalleriAri is a small gallery in the city of Mikkeli, the art sold in this gallery isn’t the best, but get’s sold very good. To me it seems the openings are fast after one another, I have already visited two openings in the last two months.

I have also visited one opening at the Art Museum Mikkeli, this was an opening of contemporary art, the artists were also there. This was much more official compared to the openings at the gallery. It was hard to follow, because I don’t speak Finnish, but still very interesting. During the talk about the artist’s work a child was following the lines of a wooden sculpture. She forgot the world around her en was completely focused on this sculpture. It was good to observe this, see how children view art. In my research I find out that you don’t always need words to consider pictures, and for me this was the perfect example. Especially children don’t always need words, because they see the world different than adults.

Opening of the exhibition of Finish artists in the Mikkeli Museum of Art. The works are of members of the Finnish Artist's organization.

Observation of a child who is concentrated looking the construction of the art work. The child is deeply affected by the ongoing line of the sculpture and is loosing the contact with the surroundings. The art work is telling her a lot in visual signs.

Participating in the promotion of the art centre in the annual Christmas fair in the local sport hall. Many of the inhabitants (2300) are visiting this event.

A part of the practice is developing the own artistic skills.
Working with a material like GOUACHE is something else than ACRYLIC and gives new views on the way the art process is going.

In combination with working with a group of adults in an art course the content of the work is developing in different directions. Doing research in painting gives more levels in the final result and gives also experiences in looking for new and unexpected solutions.

Discussing about child art and teaching art education gives information about the art process of children and young people.
In the art centre is a lot of inspiring information and experiences about this part of the practice.

The invitation to take part in the Christmas tree exhibition is a realistic experience in the art profession. Different international artists are realizing the exhibition. The installation of Céline is next to the wall painting of the Russian painter Alexander Nikitin. The Finnish artist Eva Häkkinen has made an art impression of the traditional Finnish Christmas room.

The whole room is transformed in a white landscape that can be a winter landscape as well as clouds in the sky. The impression gives the viewer the feeling of silence, retreat and peace without any information than the reconstruction of the room. It works without any further explanation.

This exhibition is very interesting at this internship. Not only do I have the chance to guide people trough the museum, there are also other aspects. This is la multicultural exhibition: Russian, Finnish and twice Dutch. It is about Christmas, something all these cultures celebrate, still you can clearly see the difference between these three cultures. Within the exhibition different aspects of Christmas are brought together. In the tour I could show the visitors the differences between these three cultures at Christmas, seen through the eyes of artists (and a student).
