symposium CHILDREN'S LABYRINTH 2010 - artists
MARC WALTER - CANADA
PROPOSAL
Marc Walter proposed an installation that would have two components:
• a large chamber
• one or several tall sculptures in the centre of that chamber
The size and proportions of the chamber would be dictated by the spaces
available in the Labyrinth as well as by his feelings while discovering the
site.
The artist left his process open enough for other ideas to emerge from his first
walks within the Labyrinth.
ON SITE
The Retreat
Marc Walter walked the paths of the labyrinth several times before choosing his
location. He was attracted by a few deciduous trees surrounded by several pine
trees and decided to extract a space from there. Marc worked first on designing
the walls with willow trees, defining the limits of his interventions.
He discovered that it was the constant change of light in the tight path which
fascinated him.
He therefore decided to close the ceiling of most of the area, bringing shadow
into it. He then gave most of his attention to the corner with the deciduous
trees, creating one tower with a little door as the only access. Only that tower
remains open to the sky. Wool was added on the inside of the tower. More light,
different texture, high surroundings, all elements to get the visitor to feel
surprised and protected. The visitor, young or old, will have to look in all
corners and experience the space, nature and light with a new angle.
Curator of this symposium is the sculptor

and working in Kangasniemi.
