| Saksala ArtRadius has started to build an ART LABYRINTH in a neglected young forest of one hectare situated in front of the main building of the art centre.
In spring 2007 two artists (Irene Anton – Germany and Ulrika Sparre – Sweden) have made the main structure of the paths. The green part of the LABYRINTH has been opened for the public in May 2007. The other parts are still under construction and not open. The planning for, and realization of, the content of these parts has to be done during the coming years. The LABYRINTH is an ongoing and growing art work with the contribution of national and international artists. During summer 2007 different experiences with artists, story tellers, musicians and children’s activities were organized to test how the artists anticipate on the conditions of this unique area. One of the results of this research is the decision to create a special area for children in the LABYRINTH. It will give the possibility to integrate a children’s atmosphere in the LABYRINTH. For the year 2009 art centre Saksala ArtRadius is making plans for this children’s area in the LABYRINTH. This will be a permanent CHILDREN’S LABYRINTH and is located in the blue part. It is separate from the green and red parts and it is possible to build up an own atmosphere in it. Richard Louv (USA) (chairman of Children & Nature Network) concludes in his book –Last Child in the Woods- ‘Nature makes children are more concentrate and more satisfied. Children need to play, to construct and to find the secrets of nature by going into nature. We do not skimp on nature time for children.’ With the CHILDREN'S LABYRINTH there will be a place to keep living with the forest and with wood alive. There is a long tradition in working with wood and using it in daily life and it . In 2009 the art centre will actually develop the LABYRINTH and the CHILDREN’S FOREST. Both are related to each other. The LABYRINTH is not traditional in Finland, but this forest invites creating a mystical place where artists can explore their vision on the woods. During the WOOD/INSTALLATION SYMPOSIUM in the spring of 2008 artists have added new elements in an artistic sense to the LABYRINTH. Through visual art the location will be transformed and visitors will be invited to participate in the scene, created by artists. Children will be invited to develop and realize their constructive imagination. Supplemented with (old) poetry, literature, fairy tales, theatre, songs and music a new ‘sound’ can created. |

| National and international artists will be invited to develop a permanent, inspiring and inviting environment for children of all ages in cooperation with children and teachers.
The cultural background of the children from different origin and the vision of artists from different parts of the world will be combined in the development of the project to build up an amazing new and artistic world. The CHILDREN’S LABYRINTH will be a place where (art) teachers can find new ideas and content for the art education curriculum. It is possible to organize own school projects in the nature of the CHILDREN’S LABYRINTH. During all seasons, with their typical conditions, activities will be planned and organized. The CHILDREN’S LABYRINTH will be a practicing place for students of teacher's training colleges to develop their skills in art education with children from different cultures. |
